Traveling to the islands of Haida Gwaii left a significant mark on me. Located right off the coast of British Columbia, this place held a certain atmosphere that I had never felt before. In retrospect my time there became the culmination of many dreams and desires throughout the years.
At Spirit Lake I was startled by a raven that began vocalizing strange sounds at me. It had landed up in a barren tree overlooking the lake and this creature was demanding my attention. I stood there in awe, unable to understand what it was trying to get across. As soon as the raven had vanished, I was overwhelmed by the feeling that I had experienced something mystical. It made my journey on these islands all the more memorable and I have not stopped thinking about it since.
The memory of this encounter is so powerful that when I started improvising on an electric guitar, I kept thinking about it again and again. Trying to make sense of it while I was playing and wondering just why it was so meaningful to me, an album started to take form.
In many ways I feel this music called out to me and I couldn't ignore its presence. Having sparked something that I still don't fully comprehend, these songs truly belong at a Spirit Lake.
